Moxie smelled blood.

Then Jack came back around from behind the big rocks. Jack’s forelegs and front paws were bloody. He held them out, away from himself. He moved stiffly down to his place at the spring. There he scrubbed his forelegs with sand and water.

Then Jack sat back on his heels. He looked up at the sky. He looked around at the meadow. He looked thoughtful. He looked sad.

Then Jack got busy. He took off his clothes and sat down in the water. He began vigorously scrubbing himself and his clothes with the dark wet sand.

Moxie watched him, then looked back to the big rock. She left the other dogs, to go see what had happened behind it, and why the smell of blood.
